Tub Spout Old/Not Working Properly

Has your tub spout seen better days and no amount of scrubbing seems to help? Or perhaps your diverter no longer does what it was designed to do.

If this is the case, then it is probably time to replace that tub spout altogether. Before you head to your local home improvement store to pick out your new tub spout, be sure to determine the type of connection you have. To do this, you should remove your existing tub spout by twisting counterclockwise. Or your tub spout might have a set screw that you will need to remove before the tub spout will come off. And, if you have had your tub spout for a while and it won’t budge when you turn it, here’s a helpful hint: use the handle of a tool like a hammer or large wrench as leverage to rotate it.

Something you may not know is that the pipe sticking out of the wall that the tub spout is attached to is called a stub out. There are basically two types of stub outs: 1) smooth and unthreaded or 2) threaded.
Some of the common types of connections are:
  • ½” copper pipe slip connection
  • ½” male threaded connection with short stub out
  • ½” male threaded connection with long stub out nipple
  • ¾” male threaded connection with short stub out nipple
The easiest way to ensure you get a tub spout that fits your connection is to take your current tub spout with you to your local home improvement store where someone can help you find the right fit for your connection. Or you can find a Universal Fit tub spout that is designed to work with most connections so you can be certain you are getting the right fit.
